Volvo is not slowing down. The Swedish automaker is determined to upgrade the lineup of crossovers and SUVs. We read rumors about the XC30 and the new largest XC100. What we know so far is that the 2022 Volvo XC40 will use an electric drivetrain, which might become the sole option for the engine room. Also, a coupe version is about to debut next season. It is really hard to keep up with the news coming from Volvo, but the main goal is clear – the manufacturer turns to green sources of power. Some sources claim by 2025 all the conventional drivetrains with internal combustion will be dropped. The XC40 is already in that way and the XC90 is definitely the last one to do so. Volvo needs a huge battery for this one.

The XC40 debuted in 2019 and it expands pretty fast. However, we won’t see any major upgrade for the current styling on the base version. But, the all-electric Recharge version and the new coupe will definitely expand the range. Momentum, R-Design and Inscription are trim levels. Engine configurations for the standard lineup are T4 and T5, both based on a 2.0-liter petrol engine.

2022 Volvo XC40: Pros and Cons

The 2022 Volvo XC40 is a subcompact crossover with unique combination of styling and power. The small SUV is not too fuel-friendly, though. But, the XC40 returns a lot of power – up to 250 horsepower. The interior is definitely a reason why you should be after this crossover. The unique layout and premium materials will make a ride more comfortable than ever. Advanced safety and infotainment features will stun you at the first sight. On the other hand, some users complained about the commands on the multimedia system. We would also like to see a kind of hybrid version.

Engines

Under the hood of the 2022 Volvo XC40 will still lay a T4 setup that includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The configuration is good for 187 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. That is more than enough for the subcompact segment. Mercedes GLA beats the output, BMW X1 is at the same level, while the Audi Q3 starts with a lighter configuration. An all-wheel drive is standard and the base configuration returns 23/32 mpg. For this class, this is poor mileage.

The highway rating drops to 30 mpg with the T5 setup. The same 2.0-liter engine is the main source of power, but the enhanced system squeezes 250 ponies and 258 lb-ft. The start/stop system is standard and it can be switched off from the infotainment screen. An eight-speed transmission is a power router for both engines.

The novelty for the next season is an all-electric vehicle. The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge will be back and this version will slowly become the flagship model in the lineup. Also called T8 AWD, the crossover is getting power from a pure electric battery. The advanced system provides 400 horsepower and the subcompact SUV will have a range of at least 200 miles. There are no doubts that Volvo will work on upgrades to catch up with rivals that are already at 250 and more miles per charge. The price of the Recharge EV crossover will be just under $50,000.

The coupe crossover might be the next step in the evolution of the XC40. We can find interesting rendering that shows the vehicle based on the standard vehicle. But, the sloped roofline make it more aggressive. Still, we are asking – how this move would be practical? The subcompact crossover is already cramped at the back and the 2022 Volvo XC40 Coupe would cut some headroom. The inspiration for images is coming from the Coupe Concept for the future fastback sedan from Volvo. It can be used for the subcompact crossover, but we don’t expect too much.

Trim Levels, Prices and Accessories

Versatility is one of the best things about the 2022 Volvo XC40. It is small and agile for the city ride, and yet powerful enough for weekend runaways. Well, a bit of extra space could be useful. But, if you need it, consider buying the XC60. The base offer includes leather seats and blind-spot monitoring at the Momentum trim. The package comes with 18-inch wheels, a power tailgate, and LED lamps. You can get even bigger wheels, as the optional purchase, or by picking the R-Design trim. The panoramic moonroof is definitely something that could make you buy this version. If not, there are also navigation, parking sensors, and extra safety features. The most luxurious features are available with the Inscription model.

The starting MSRP of the 2022 Volvo XC40 will stay around $34,000. R-Design will be close to $40,000 and Inscription adds another grand or two. The all-electric Recharge is going to cost $50,000 before any upgrades. A discount is possible in some states thanks to the tax refund policies. Recharging network is still a problem in some regions, but the expansion will be imminent when EVs take over the market.
