The success of the CX-5 made Mazda recognizable again. The Japanese company started expanding the lineup with smaller and larger models. Now, it is time for electrification. The first-ever EV by this carmaker will be the CX-30. The next one is a larger CX-50 based on the 2022 Mazda CX-5. The compact crossover will enter the new generation with style. With an electric motor in the mix, we can’t say what we expect more.
Nevertheless, the 2022 Mazda CX-5will keep its SkyActiv engine as the main choice. Three different configurations are currently available. Since Mazda is choosing the green way, the turbodiesel powerplant will probably be dropped for the next-gen crossover. Also, we might see a hybrid as well.
There are a lot of possibilities. A few things are official, but even this news produces further speculations. The redesign is definitely taking place, although the crossover is not too old. The latest version debuted in 2017, and in 2022 we will see the big update.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Engines
Let’s start with the existing lineup. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit is the perfect entry-level mill for the compact segment. It delivers 190 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque, which is something fans expect from such a vehicle. The SkyActtiv technology makes the engine very efficient and it returns 30 mpg on highways with all-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive is standard, though, and comes with 26/31 mpg. A six-speed transmission is sending power to axles. The cylinder deactivation system will improve the efficiency of the vehicle.
Buyers looking for more power will have a more potent option. The same displacement gets a boost by turbochargers to reach outputs of 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The new system is available only with the AWD mode and decreases the gas mileage to 24 mpg combined.
Hybrid Replaces Diesel
The SkyActiv-D is a turbodiesel configuration that squeezes 170 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque from 2.2-liter displacement. The technology improves emission results. However, oil-burners are still big polluters. So, the company is looking to cut this unit. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is not going to offer a diesel engine in the US. In some other markets, this is a more popular powerplant.
Instead, the SkyActiv-X is the badge for the hybrid drivetrain. The base 2.5-liter petrol engine is already mated to a mild-hybrid system, but it is not exactly what we expect from such a setup. The CX-5 should get an engine that will make it competitive to Toyota Rav4 and Ford Escape, whose hybrid models can return more than 40 mpg.

What could 2022 Mazda CX-50 Bring?
The Japanese company filed for the new trademark. The CX-50 will soon join the lineup. Of course, Mazda is not unveiling details, but we can compare it to the CX-30. This is the all-electric sibling of the subcompact CX-3. So, the CX-50 might be the CX-5 EV. It has sense since chiefs said more electric vehicles will be available soon and by 2030, the entire lineup will be electrified.
The new platform is being developed by engineers. According to our sources, it will support a rear-wheel drive, which is an important switch from the current version. Well, it is not the first time Mazda is using this setup, since the new Mazda6 sedan is riding on it. The positive feedback made the manufacturer expand the offer.
The 2022 Mazda CX-50 is not going to be only an all-electric SUV. An inline-six petrol engine is also an option. Again, this is something we find in Mazda6. Experts believe that output will jump to 350 ponies on the sedan. For the compact crossover, total power could be lower. The I-6 configuration will be borrowed from BMW.

Redesign, Interior
There are no details about the upcoming update. But, if we take a look at Mazda6, where other models will find inspiration for drivetrain updates, we might find some interesting solutions for the crossover. For example, larger grille and new headlights are eye-catching. The update will also include fresh colors and sets of wheels.
The interior of all Mazdas is one of the biggest advantages. Some even think that the company is producing premium vehicles. Upscale materials and advanced technologies are making the small SUV so special. There is no reason why we won’t see the 2022 Mazda CX-5 with an even better layout.
When Will 2022 Mazda CX-5 Be Available?
The redesign of the crossover will need some time. Whatsoever, as the 2022 YM, CX-5 has plenty of time. We believe that the premiere is about to happen in mid-2021, while the production and sales should start by the end of the year. The CX-50 is still waiting for the green light and official registration to the lineup. Nevertheless, the company is developing it, and the only question is what name it is going to use.
