With the market recovering from the heavy hit caused by the COVID-19 outburst, we expect the 2022 Honda CR-V to shine again. By then, the situation should be back to normal and we will have again the full picture of crossover’s value. It was one of the best-selling models in 2019. The company added a hybrid drivetrain that made the CR-V returning more than 40 mpg.

Without significant changes on the 2021 YM, we could see the 2022 Honda CR-V redesigned. As the matter of fact, that is what the entire market is expecting – fans, experts and competition. The company introduced the latest facelift in 2019. In the compact crossover segment, changes are happening more frequently. The 2022 redesign will be the final step before the new generation. The current series was introduced in 2016, a season after the huge success of the Honda Pilot SUV. The same design language resulted in the same growth of popularity for its smaller sibling. But now, both models require attention to stay competitive in their segments.

The question is if the Japanese engineers are doing something on a more powerful version. We are not looking only for the performance-oriented Type R model, but also the plug-in hybrid setup. Ford and Toyota are already in the market with Escape PHEV and Rav4 Prime. This should make Honda doing the same treatment on its most popular crossover SUV.

It is hard to predict what the 2022 Honda CR-V will bring. There are no spy photos to unveil anything. On the other hand, Pilot was spotted a few times under heavy camouflage. Again, the lack of visible details makes predictions tougher. Still, we expect the two flagship models to share styling solution. A new grille, headlights design, and a larger bumper would make the crossover more aggressive.

The interior also needs to be refreshed. Well, a few years after the facelift, it is still appealing. Nevertheless, the technology evolves very fast and the leading companies need to keep the pace. That is why we see infotainment and multimedia systems being updated more often.

Users are praising the layout and the simplicity of the Honda infotainment center. The facelift might bring a larger touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. You will definitely want to add the HondaLink app which will allow you remote start and climate control from your smartphone. Upper trim levels are coming with navigation. For the 2022 Honda CR-V, the company will work on improved voice commands and shortcut buttons to make the use even easier.

Trim Levels

Like most Hondas, the CR-V will also offer the LX as the entry-level model. This time, the most popular smartphone integration services will be available right from the start. Honda Sensing is also part of the package. The EX splits into the standard offer and the EX-L with the leather upholstery. A power sunroof and heated seats are standard, while the leather buckets come alongside with premium audio, power tailgate, larger multimedia screen and wheels.

The 2022 Honda CR-V Touring is top of the lineup version with the most advanced features the company can offer to its buyers. For example, we expect navigation, hands-free tailgate, HondaLink, and adaptive headlights with this bundle. Of course, it will be available with a hybrid engine, as the alternative to a four-banger.

2022 Honda CR-V Engines, Specs, Hybrid

A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine remains the main source of power for the 2022 Honda CR-V. 190 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque this engine is producing is above the average for the compact crossover class. The small block is also very efficient, returning 28/34 mpg. After the redesign, when the CR-V becomes lighter, the gas mileage will probably go up. All-wheel drive will harm the outputs a bit.

If you need a more efficient ride, then the 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid steps with 40/35 mpg. A 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle unit is not new. It already features on the Accord Hybrid sedan. Now, it makes the CR-V one of the most efficient rides in the segment. A four-cylinder engine, with a help of electric motors, can produce 212 hp and 232 lb-ft of twist. These numbers could go up if Honda decides to develop the plug-in hybrid version. Also, a high-output Type R model is in the mix. Premium Acura added the Type S to the SUV lineup. Now, it is turned for Honda to introduce such a vehicle, that will compete with German luxury crossovers.

When Will 2022 Honda CR-V be Launched?

There are no changes on the 2021 YM, so we believe the company is focused on the next update. It will occur on the 2022 model and its premiere is set for the summer. The company is going to launch sales earlier than usual. However, everything depends on the redesign, the new PHEV system, and eventually Type R. The base price should stay put, while the higher-end models will be more expensive thanks to the additional features Honda is going to install.
