Pickups are becoming more and more popular every year and as a result, a completely new class of pickups has just been established. Besides typical full-size and mid-size pickups, there is also the segment of compact pickups, which is perfect for non-traditional pickup buyers, who want the practicality of an open bed but don’t want a vehicle that’s too large and not particularly comfortable. One of the class pioneers comes in the form of 2022 Ford Maverick, which is coming in the near future.

The new pickup will ride on a unibody platform and from what we can see, it will be very affordable. Most of the mechanics will be shared with the Bronco Sport, which indicates that the new truck will be comfortable both on and off the road. You may count on two powertrain options and one of them will be hybridized.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is expected to feature a starting price of around 20.000 dollars.

2022 Ford Maverick Design

The new pickup features a little bit untypical design, especially when it comes to the platform. Unlike bigger Ford trucks, this one doesn’t ride on a body-on-frame platform. Instead, it uses a car-like, unibody platform, the same one that’s used for models like Bronco Sport, Escape etc. Such a design brings obvious benefits, but a couple of limitations as well.

When it comes to benefits, the first thing that comes to mind is ride quality. Thanks to the unibody setup and more refined suspension setup, the ride is more comfortable and more stable at higher speeds. On the other hand, the main drawback reflects in the form of max towing capacity, which goes up to 4.000 pounds. For comparison, BoF pickups usually tow at least 6.500 pounds. Moreover, the Maverick’s key rival, Hyundai Santa Cruz tows up to 5.000 pounds.

Exterior

When it comes to the exterior design, the first thing that should be mentioned is the size. This is a compact pickup, that measures around 121 inches in wheelbase, which a total length is under 200 inches. For comparison, the mid-size Ford Ranger is good for about 127 inches in wheelbase.

Of course, there is the matter of styling. The Maverick features a quite unique styling, which doesn’t have too many things in common with bigger pickups in the Blue Oval lineup. Of course, the overall shape is typical for a pickup, but the front end features a little bit different layout compared to models like Ranger and F-150.

Also, the 2022 Ford Maverick will be offered in just one configuration, with a double cab and a 4.5-foot bed.

Interior

On the inside, the 2022 Ford Maverick comes with a rather simplistic design approach. We particularly like the dashboard layout, which features classic lines and design. The instrument cluster combines analog and digital instruments, while there is also a nice infotainment screen on the center stack. On the other hand, the center console features an old-school design, with physical buttons and controls.

The list of standard features is also quite decent. Base models come with an 8-inch touchscreen, as well as with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Among options, you can find things like wireless charging, upgraded audio system, satellite radio etc. Safety features like automatic emergency braking will be standard, while goodies like lane departure warning, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control will be available.

As we already mentioned, every Maverick will come in a double cab layout, with a seating capacity for five. Still, four adults sounds like a proper measure of this pickup. Behind the cabin, you may count on a 4.5-foot cargo bed.

2022 Ford Maverick Engines

Interestingly, the base 2022 Ford Maverick will come with a hybrid setup. The system is based on a 2.5-liter engine and small electric motor, for a combined output of 191 horsepower. The system comes paired with a CVT gearbox. While that’s definitely enough power for a vehicle of this type, many drivers would rather choose something peppier. For them, Ford has prepared a version with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, which puts out around 250 horsepower. Also, a big difference is that this engine comes in pair with 8-speed automatic transmission.

When it comes to fuel economy, the hybrid version offers some pretty impressive ratings. According to the manufacture, the average economy will go around 37 mpg combined. On the other hand, the turbo-four should be able to provide around 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

2022 Ford Maverick Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2022 Ford Maverick will hit the market by the end of this year. The starting price should go around 20.000 dollars, while the most expensive versions will probably remain under $30.000. So far, Hyundai Santa Cruz is the only direct competitor.
