2022 Buick Encore GX Small SUV Review
The 2022 Buick Encore GX is a new SUV with more options than the standard model. Well, the carmaker updated the vehicle and launched the second generation of Encore. The subcompact crossover achieved the record in sales and the company expected the further improvements. But, the pandemic spoiled plans and now we expect the market to recover. Still, it will take some time before sales get back to an old level. Some models might be discontinued, since the COVID-19 outburst made the same effect as the economy crisis that happened 10 years ago.
The new small SUV is going to offer different types of drivetrains and that is the main difference between the 2022 Buick Encore GX and Encore. Instead of a 1.4-liter powertrain, there are two smaller units. Like the standard lineup, you will find three trim levels available. The GX is going to compete against Chevy Trailblazer and Nissan Rogue Sport.
2022 Buick Encore GX Specs
The standard 1.4-liter engine is good for 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain is pretty efficient with 25/30 mpg. The 2022 Buick Encore GX is going to replace it with a 1.2-liter turbo I-3 as the base configuration. This one is good for 137 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. A three-cylinder unit is returning 28/31 mpg, but only front-wheel drive is available. A 9-speed automatic transmission is a power router. More potent 1.3-liter inline-3 is also turbocharged. It adds more power and torque, 155 hp and 175 lb-ft, but keeps great gas mileage – 30/32 mpg. Upgrade to a larger engine is going to add another option – all-wheel drive.
2022 Buick Encore GX Trim Levels
Well, most of the remaining stuff is pretty much the same as the base Encore. There are three trim levels available for the crossover. Preferred is the entry version and it comes with a smaller displacement and 18-inch alloy wheels. Automatic brakes are included and a few more advanced safety features. Apple Carplay/Android Auto connectivity is standard. The GX Select is going to add power driver’s bucket and heating to front row. Climate control is zonal. Blind-spot monitor is upgrading the safety. Navigation is not standard, but it is one of the available options. Leather interior and Bose sound system is part of the 2022 Buick Encore GX Essence. Plus, LED lamps are in exterior lights. Wireless charger is the final piece of upgrades for the top of the lineup crossover.
Encore GX vs Encore
Like said, the 2022 Buick Encore GX is going to be rival to Chevy Trailblazer and Nissan Rogue Sport. These are new models positioned between subcompact and compact vehicles. The GX is 7 inch longer than the Encore. Although these two share similar styling and trim levels, two different platforms have been used. Extra length and wheelbase means more room inside the cockpit.
A subcompact crossover is not too cheap. But, buyers will get some advanced features for $24,200. This is the configuration with a smaller engine. The Select model costs $1,600 and Essence starts up at $28,600. Not all versions are eligible for AWD, which will cost $2k. However, that includes a larger engine as well. So, not a bad package. Fully-loaded, the 2022 Buick Encore GX can reach up to $30,000.
The arrival of the GX model started a new project. Since subcompact crossovers are not too popular, while compact vehicles are the best-selling segment, SUVs between these two tiers might improve sales. Experts believe the Encore GX has a bright future and it will last longer than the base Encore.
