Despite the recent update, the Swedish carmaker will introduce a new, third generation of its flagship crossover in less than two years. Most likely, the new model will come as the 2021 Volvo XC90 and it will come with some pretty serious updates and upgrades over the current model. Besides typical redesign changes in terms of styling, interior design and similar things, Volvo will introduce loads of new technologies as well.

The first thing we should mention is a new autonomous driving system. It will be able to haul passengers without any intervention. Also, the new Volvo XC90 2021 will be all about electrification and the powertrain offer will consist of hybrid and electric models only. Like in the new XC60, oil-burners won’t be in the offer. When it comes to the launch date, the latest reports are suggesting we could see the all-new model in 2021.

2021 Volvo XC90 Redesign

Naturally, this redesign will bring a lot of novelties and we should probably start from the most basic thing. First of all, there is a new platform to come. It won’t be an all-new architecture, but rather an updated version of the current SPA platform. Still, we count on significant improvements, as the current model has a couple of notable drawbacks. The biggest complaint goes to the ride quality. The current generation is very luxurious, but the ride can be pretty firm on pawn roads, especially if you pick models will larger wheels.

That is something the Swedish manufacturer needs to solve for the next generation. Also, we count on notable weight savings. We expect from the new model to save hundreds of pounds, as that seems like a must, given the fact that the new generation will be all about electrifications, which in practice means more weight that models with internal combustion engines.

Level 4 Autonomy Driving

The Swedish manufacturer is investing a lot in autonomy driving systems. Therefore, the new Highway Assist system will be one of the biggest novelties of this redesign. This will be a Level 4 autonomous driving system. In practice, this means rides from point A to point B without any human intervention. This sounds great, but keep in mind that this won’t be a complete autonomous driving, as the system will work on major roads only, primarily on highways, as the name of the system says.

Of course, we presume that Volvo will constantly work on upgrades in this system, so some future versions will definitely be able to cover more roads than the initial one. The system will be an optional feature and we may presume it will be pretty expensive, a couple of thousands at least.

The ultimate goal of the Swedish manufacturer is to offer a Level 5 autonomous driving system. However, this is still a distant future for all companies in the automotive industry and it will take years if not decades to see cars without steering wheel and pedals on the road.

This is another interesting thing about the new model. According to the latest reports, this may be one of the first models in the class to say goodbye to classic gasoline engines. Diesel units will be dropped for sure. The 2021 Volvo XC90 redesign will be all about electrification. Therefore, we count on a couple of hybrid versions, plug-in hybrids in particular. Moreover, the all-electric version will be in the offer as well. The exact details are still unavailable. Still, we may presume that the exact numbers will start coming as we get closer to the Volvo XC90 redesign 2021.

Styling and Interior Design

These things are still a complete mystery. At this point, we can only make predictions and we believe the new model will come with evolutionary changes in terms of the styling. We presume that the overall shape will remain the same, as well as dimensions. On the other side, the front face will come with significant novelties. We believe that the new look will include a lot of futuristic elements, given all the new technologies that are about to come with the new Volvo XC90 2021.

When it comes to the interior, we have no doubt that the new model will be as great as the current one. The current generation already offers pretty amazing interior design. Despite the age, the current cabin design still looks amazing and can keep up with newer younger competitors like Audi Q7 or Mercedes GLE Class. All in all, expectations in this aspect are pretty big. We count on a spacious cabin, full of first-rate materials and latest tech features.
