Recently, there have been rumors regarding the possible comeback of Mazda’s once-popular SUV. That’s right; we’re talking about the famous CX-7 model. The previous generation was produced from 2006 to 2012. But, the Japanese automaker decided to replace the compact SUV with the CX-5. However, there are some indications that we might see brand-new 2021 Mazda CX-7 next season.
Well, the company can’t leave a space in the lineup, especially in such a growing segment which attracts more and more audience each year. Also, there’s another possibility. Mazda will produce the CX-8 model, which will be available only for the customers in Japan.
The CX-8 could be named CX-7 for the rest of the world. But, we will have to wait and see when these models arrive. On top of that, Mazda is currently working on a hybrid version, that will be introduced in 2022.
2021 Mazda CX-7 Design
It’s still unknown in which class the upcoming 2021 Mazda CX-7 will fit. The Japanese carmaker could decide to build a coupe crossover SUV from the concept. Well, that can be a good thing for the company, since there’s not much competition within that segment. But, the coupe crossovers are not as much popular as other vehicles.
Nevertheless, the production of such a model could be a much-needed breakthrough for Mazda. So, it won’t be a big surprise if the forthcoming CX-7 ends up in this class. As for the cabin, we expect to see a well-designed interior with premium features and high-quality materials. Well, it would be nice if Mazda includes features like a 7-inch touchscreen and some chrome accents.
Also, we would love to see a minimalistic approach to the design. Besides, when it comes to comfort, this company is famous for luxury interiors. The CX-7 won’t be different. Therefore, we hope to see power-adjustable seats, enough head-, legroom, outstanding safety, premium sound system and similar goodies.
What Engine Could 2021 Mazda CX-7 Use?
When it comes, 2021 Mazda CX-7 will use a SkyActiv technology. One of the potential engine solutions could be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder drivetrain. But, the power and the total output of this unit will depend on the CX-7 dimensions. So, if the upcoming model comes as a compact SUV, the 2.5-liter mill will be turbocharged, and it will produce 250 hp.
However, if Mazda decided to build a crossover model, the total output will be approximately 160 hp. Besides the petrol engine, CX-7 will probably use a 2.2 turbodiesel as well. This engine makes 170 ho and 290 lb-ft of torque. But, this engine option could not be included in the US version of the vehicle, since it doesn’t meet the US emission and efficiency standards. So, if the Mazda contains a diesel engine for the CX-7, it won’t be available for the customers in the States.
What About the Hybrid?
The third option could be a hybrid setup. Well, if Mazda decides to go with the hybrid as well, the 2021 CX-7 will come as a crossover. No doubt, the company needs such a model in the lineup. Also, the existing 2.5-liter mill could be a perfect match with the electric motors.
This unit returns 28 mpg combined, and it will improve the whole system. But, does it have qualities to match the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V? Well, it’s hard to say right now. We expect to see the hybrid version by 2022. Who knows, maybe with some adjustments and updates, CX-7 becomes the most efficient model in the segment.
2021 Mazda CX-7 Price and Release Date
As we mentioned in the first paragraph, the previous generation of CX-7 was in production between 2006 and 2012. Then, Mazda decides to replace it with the CX-5 crossover. Admittedly, we would love to see a new generation of the CX-7.
Well, if the rumors are true, that could happen by the end of the year. The starting price shouldn’t differ much from the rest of the lineup. We expect that CX-7 will start around $30,000.
