Crossovers are taking over the market but there are no reasons why we should have classic body-on-frame SUVs in the offer as well. After all, most of us want a vehicle that is actually capable of dealing with a hard task, not something that just visually resembles such a vehicle. Therefore, Nissan is seriously considering to bring back a model that was discontinued just four years ago.

Of course, we are talking about the 2020 Nissan Xterra, which has been rumored. The reason is simple, the redesigned Frontier is finally coming, so the launch of an SUV like Xterra wouldn’t require too many resources. The two vehicles would share the platform, as well as many other things, including some styling solutions. Compared to the previous generation, the new 2020 Nissan Xterra would come with a completely new engine lineup, with far more efficient units under the hood. If we can rely on the latest reports, the new model should arrive sometime in the next year.

2020 Nissan Xterra Redesign

The new 2020 Nissan Xterra is definitely a highly anticipated model. Today’s market doesn’t have many mid-size and compact SUVs to offer. Practically, the only two models are the Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Wrangler. Also, keep in mind that the legendary Bronco is coming back as well. It seems that the interest for such vehicles is growing, so there is no reason why Nissan shouldn’t offer its model in the segment as well. This makes perfect sense, especially if we consider that the new model would use the same platform as the next-generation Frontier, which is actually a platform that already underpins quite a similar pickup truck called Navara. This seems like a perfect foundation for the upcoming 2020 Nissan Xterra.

Exterior Design

Without any doubt, this platform from Navara seems like a perfect choice for the 2020 Nissan Xterra. The international truck has been well known for its great driving characteristics, which are perfectly mixed with a lot of capabilities. Therefore, we are sure that this architecture would work well for an SUV as well. If we can rely on the latest reports, the new SUV will borrow almost complete mechanics. Also, it is expected to become bigger, compared to the previous model. The new version will strictly belong to the segment of mid-size SUVs and will take the place that belonged to the Pathfinder in the past.

Visually, the new model will also rely on the famous truck. More precisely, it should feature the same front as the upcoming next-generation Frontier, which will take a lot of inspiration from the Navara. Other than the identical front end, we expect to see a typical SUV design, with a wagon-like body style, long wheelbase, short overhangs etc.

Interior

When it comes to the interior details, we will have to wait to see the new Frontier first. Once the next-generation truck arrives, we will know more details about the 2020 Nissan Xterra. Most likely, it will come with the same approach. This means that the company will probably put the focus on rigidity and functionality. The new cabin definitely won’t be as refined as in modern crossover, but rather durable and functional. Still, we have no doubt it will be comfortable and spacious. Typically for a mid-size SUV, it should come standard with three rows of seats. Also, we count on a lot of standard equipment, which will also include a lot of the latest tech goodies. This refers not just to the infotainment system and other gadgetry, but also to advanced safety systems and driver aids.

At this point, there are two strong candidates for the hood of 2020 Nissan Xterra and it looks like both of them will find the place inside the new SUV. Compared to the previous generation, the new model will come with something more efficient. Still, it will stick to six cylinders once again. Most likely, we will see a familiar 3.5-liter V6 under the hood, tuned to somewhere between 280 and 300 horsepower, which seems like a perfect measure for an SUV like this one.

Latest reports are suggesting that the new 2020 Nissan Xterra won’t just come to North America but to other parts of the world as well, including Europe and Australia. Therefore, a diesel version seems like a certain thing. The exact unit is still unknown, but we presume it could be a familiar 2.3-liter turbodiesel from Renault, which delivers around 190 horsepower. Some reports are also suggesting a new 3.0-liter V6 from Mercedes-Benz. This one powers the new X-Class and delivers around 255 horsepower.

  1. I need it to come back. My 2007 XTerra is showing wear in the computer components. I have already changed out the brake system module, and now it is showing a tire pressure problem. Am disappointed it was not brought back sooner.

  2. Disappointed that they are changing the A-symmetrical design of the back. I loved the look and the built-in-space for the first-aid kit. Look forward to better gas mileage however.
