Rumors about the comeback of the legendary SUV has been circulating around for many years. However, such a scenario didn’t look very likely, until now. According to the latest reports, the Japanese manufacturer plans to bring back the famous nameplate. The last time this model was redesigned was in 2006. These days, the same version is available on certain markets, such as Chine, under the more famous Pajero name, of course. Moreover, we have seen mild updates recently, which indicates that the company has plans for the future. If we can rely on the internet reports, there is a big chance that the new 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will come already in the next year, developed together with another iconic SUV nameplate, Nissan Patrol.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, this model hasn’t been redesigned since 2006 and it has been dropped from most markets. However, you can still find it in China and a few more countries. Moreover, we saw an update last year, which has brought a couple of subtle novelties in terms of styling. Such changes made this SUV a little bit fresher for a while, but we believe that the company has much bigger plans for the future.
Considering that Mitsubishi is now part of the Renault Nissan Alliance, it’s no wonder that many experts suggest tight cooperation with Nissan. Moreover, the new Mitsubishi Montero 2020 would ride on the same platform, which would be developed as a part of the joint venture. Not only that Pajero/Monter desperately needs a redesign, but the Patrol has also been around for too long, since 2010. This seems like a perfect opportunity for two companies to cur development expenses and makes two highly competitive models in highly demanding segments.
How would 2020 Mitsubishi Montero look like?
Things about mechanics seem pretty clear. The two models would share the platform and many parts. However, it is still unclear are they going to feature the same size or not. Currently, the Patrol is notably bigger and we doubt that Nissan would let some size decrease. Therefore, it looks more likely to see the new 2020 Mitsubishi Montero bigger than ever, in the segment of full-size SUVs. Of course, the two models will share most of the mechanics in this case, and ride on the same body-on-frame platform.
On the other side, each model would come with its own sheet metal. We presume that the new model would follow the brand’s latest design language, something we can see on models like Montero Sport, L200 etc. Of course, there is enough room for exclusive details as well.
Another thing that comes to mind is the engine. One thing is for sure, it won’t come from Mitsubishi, as the company doesn’t have an engine that would fit such a large vehicle. We expect to see the same unit as in the Patrol. Currently, this SUV uses a large 5.6-liter V8, which is powerful and reliable, but not the most fuel-efficient engine around. Therefore, there is a big change to see a switch to something smaller, to a turbo V6 unit. Furthermore, we could see a hybrid version in the near future as well.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Release Date
It is still early to talk about a possible release date. This redesign is nothing more than a speculation, so take everything aforementioned with a big dose of a reserve. Until we hear anything from the officials, it seems pointless to make predictions about things like 2020 Mitsubishi Montero release date or price.
