Ford makes final preparations to launch the new, sixth generation of the popular SUV. Originally known as a capable body-on-frame SUV, the Explorer is rather a unibody crossover these days. The new generation had a premiere recently and it is expected to hit the market this summer, as the 2020 Ford Explorer. It will bring plenty of novelties, much more than you would initially think.
The look may feel similar, but there is much more under the skin. The new model gets new styling but, more importantly, also a new platform, new engines etc. It is more capable, equipped better and safer than before. According to the latest reports, the new model is pretty much ready for production and the launch has been scheduled for June.

2020 Ford Explorer Redesign
As we already mentioned, this 2020 Ford Explorer redesign will bring plenty of novelties. Without any doubt, a new platform is the most significant change of this overhaul. The new model rides on the company’s brand-new CD6 platform, which will be used for the next-generation Mustang as well. Of course, the most important difference compared to the outgoing model is the RWD layout, though all-wheel drive is available as well. Thanks to a new layout, as well as to more engine power, the new model is more capable in terms of towing. With the V6 engine, it can now tow up to 5.600 pounds, which is for about 600 pounds more compared to the previous model.
Another important change is the size. The 2020 Ford Explorer may feature similar overall length but actually gains more than six inches in wheelbase. Such a design approach makes this crossover look much sportier. In practice, this also means shorter overhangs, which is important if you plan to go off-road sometimes.
2020 Ford Explorer Styling
This redesign just continued the evolution of the previous model. We didn’t see any significant departure in terms of the styling philosophy. The overall shape looks pretty similar, though we can notice a couple of improvements in terms of aerodynamics. On the other side, the front face is new. It also comes with evolutionary changes, but a couple of details are quite interesting. Of course, the most notable is new grille, which comes with different pattern and a little bit different shape. Same goes for headlights, this has been reshaped as well. Finally, the bumper has been slightly revised and now comes with tweaked air intakes, fog lights, and similar changes. Changes on the rear end are minimal and many drivers won’t even notice the difference between two models.
2020 Ford Explorer Interior
While the exterior design may look familiar, the 2020 Ford Explorer interior is

As we already mentioned, the new model features a significantly longer wheelbase. Therefore, things look much more spacious on the inside. The company claims class-leading headroom, but we can also notice more legroom and cargo space.
More Safety Features
This redesign has also brought big improvements in terms of safety. The new safety suite, called Co-Pilot360, is standard in all models. This package includes safety systems like a blind-spot monitor with a cross-traffic alert system, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and a forward collision system with automatic braking and pedestrian detection. Of course, higher trims come with even more features, so you can get things like adaptive cruise control system with lane-centering technology, an automatic rear braking system, and Ford’s latest parking assistant etc.
2020 Ford Explorer Engines
When it comes to 2020 Ford Explorer engines, an interesting fact is that all versions now have at least 300 horsepower. The base engine is a familiar 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost, which has been tuned to 300 horsepower for this occasion. Higher trims will feature a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, which delivers around 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. The 2020 Ford Explorer ST will replace the Sport trim and it will come with a max output of 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. All engines will come in a pair with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Also, the 2020 Ford Explorer hybrid version is expected in the future, though we are still waiting to get some more specific details about the new powertrain.

2020 Ford Explorer Release Date
When it comes to the 2020 Ford Explorer release date, latest reports suggest that the new model will hit the market in June. On the other side, we already know that the base 2020 Ford Explorer price will go slightly less than 34.000 dollars. When it comes to the competition, this segment is full of excellent crossovers. Still, many experts expect the new model to compete with the recently revived Chevy Blazer and Trailblazer crossovers.
