We all remember those old times when things in the automotive industry were that crazy, so even coupe utility vehicles existed. For decades, many carmakers were trying to create a vehicle that perfectly combines sporty performances with utility. This one was one of the most representative models in the class and latest reports suggest we could easily see it again, as the 2019 Chevy El Camino.
The history of this model started way back in the 50s. The original model came in 1959 and since then, we have seen five generations of it in total. The last one came in 1978 and the production finally ended nine years later, in 1987. However, that doesn’t mean that we didn’t see a few more tries from GM to create such a vehicle. It all moved to the other part of the world, to Australia where some exterminated vehicles still ride on the road. One of them is this coupe-utility vehicle, which was last time seen not so long ago. Another famous nameplate, Holden Commodore was available in this layout until five years ago.
2019 Chevy El Camino Could Come Back
Stories about this comeback have been around for a pretty long time. However, it was always nothing more than a speculation. However, it looks more possible these days than before. According to some quite reliable sources, GM is about to take another try with this model. The 2019 el Camino seems like a possible thing and to make things better, it should be amazing in many ways. It looks like the new model will ride on a familiar Alpha platform, which currently underprints pretty exclusive company of only three cars. Those are Cadillac CTS, Cadillac ATS and, most importantly, the Chevy Camaro. It seems like a clear indicator that the new 2019 El Camino will share lots of its parts with the iconic muscle car. This includes engines, mechanics, RWD layout and much. Sounds pretty amazing already.
How the new Chevy El Camino will look like?
We are pretty sure that you can already make a picture of 2019 El Camino in your head. Once it was rumored that the new model should ride on the Alpha platform, it became clear that even the visual aspect will be in a close relationship with the Camaro. In practice, this would mean that the new coupe/utility car would feature pretty much the same look as Camaro from the front bumper to the B-pillar. The current-generation Camaro is present on the market for a couple of years, so such scenario seems very likely. Of course, count on a couple of distinctive details as well. From the B-pillar, the new 2019 Chevy El Camino should come in a truckish manner. A decent-sized bed will start right after the seats and finish with a tailgate that should resemble the rear end of the Camaro in some way.
Interior
On the inside, expect a close relationship with the Camaro once again. We are pretty sure that the 2019 Chevy El Camino will come with the same or very similar dashboard layout. The Camaro’s current interior is still pretty fresh, only a couple of years old, so it seems perfect for this occasion. This would mean the same, quite simple dashboard design, with the accentuated instrument cluster, are and characterized by attractive circular air vents. Also, count on a long list of standard equipment. Base models should come with things like a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, voice controls, satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot etc. We expect to see similar trim level organization, so count models like 2019 Chevy El Camino SS as well. Of course, this means similar engines in the offer as well.
2019 Chevy El Camino Engines
Just like the Camaro, the new 2019 Chevy El Camino will start with some smaller and more basic engine. There is a big chance to see a new 2.7-liter turbo inline-four as the base engine. This one delivers around 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Of course, there is also a familiar 3.6-liter V6, with 335 hp and 285 lb-ft of torque.
As we already mentioned, trim levels like the 2019 El Camino SS should come as well. So, count on eight cylinders too. This could mean only one, a large 6.2-liter unit. Of course, we expect to see the same version with 445 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. On the other side, the most powerful 650-hp version of this engine seems like a too much for this car at the moment. Depending on the engine, you can count on either 6- or 8-speed automatic gearbox.
2019 Chevy El Camino Release Date and Price
It seems too early to speculate about the 2019 Chevy El Camino release date, considering that the new model is still waiting for the official confirmation. Still, many reports suggest its arrival already in the next year. If it arrives, the base price should go somewhere between 25.000 and 30.000 dollars.
